Περίληψη

In this lecture we will draw on several research studies that we have been involved in to explore the phenomenon of cultural diversity in Nordic music (teacher) education. We will explore the topic through lessons learned from 1) a study conducted among lower secondary school students with immigrant backgrounds in Finland, Norway and Sweden; 2) a Finnish student music teachers’ intercultural project in Cambodia; 3) an interview study among Finnish and Israeli music teacher educators, with an emphasis on intercultural competences. The following questions will be discussed: What characterizes situations of “inclusion complexity” in culturally diverse music classrooms and how do music teachers work to handle such situations? What visions for intercultural music teacher education can be drawn from these studies?
